Despite the fact that it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there’s not any hug or significant contouring to the bed. If you’re looking to sink into a mattress, then proceed from the DreamCloud.

Construction Dreamcloud vs Winkbed

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Winkbed

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to present their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud vs Winkbed

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Winkbed

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
