Construction Dreamcloud vs Winkbed vs Saatva

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Winkbed vs Saatva

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional individuals to give their view too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just explaining the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Winkbed vs Saatva

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Winkbed vs Saatva

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
