Construction Dreamcloud vs Wink
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Wink
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional individuals to present their view too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud vs Wink
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
When buying a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Wink
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will provide.
I’m especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
