Construction Dreamcloud vs Tomorrow Mattress
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Tomorrow Mattress
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other people to present their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud vs Tomorrow Mattress
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
While buying a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Tomorrow Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.
I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
