Construction Dreamcloud vs Sleep Number

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Sleep Number

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other individuals to present their view too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this mattress is pretty firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud vs Sleep Number

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Sleep Number

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
