Construction Dreamcloud vs Simmons Beautyrest

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Simmons Beautyrest

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

Now I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other individuals to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud vs Simmons Beautyrest

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Simmons Beautyrest

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
