Construction Dreamcloud vs Serta

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Serta

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to give their view as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this mattress is pretty firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud vs Serta

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, most men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Serta

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
