Construction Dreamcloud vs Sealy Silver Chill Firm

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Sealy Silver Chill Firm

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their view too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud vs Sealy Silver Chill Firm

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Sealy Silver Chill Firm

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
