Construction Dreamcloud vs Sativa

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Sativa

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to give their view as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this mattress is pretty firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Sativa

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Sativa

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
