Construction Dreamcloud vs Saatva

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Saatva

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I want to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other people to present their view as well. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.

firmness test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just describing the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud vs Saatva

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new bed, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Saatva

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.

I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
