Because it’s a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets a number of our standards for what a quality mattress should have. With eight unique layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud utilizes all the proper materials in its construction. Dreamcloud vs Saatva Mattress Reviews
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives good airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud is designed to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress contains better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid mattresses.

Despite the fact that it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there is not any hug or significant contouring to the bed. If you’re looking to sink into a mattress, then proceed from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, especially for all you back sleepers on the market.

Construction Dreamcloud vs Saatva Mattress Reviews

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Saatva Mattress Reviews

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to give their view as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of this mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud vs Saatva Mattress Reviews

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Saatva Mattress Reviews

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
