Construction Dreamcloud vs Saatva Bounce

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Saatva Bounce

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other people to present their opinion as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just describing the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud vs Saatva Bounce

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, the majority of men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Saatva Bounce

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
