Construction Dreamcloud vs Rubix

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Rubix

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three other people to present their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of this mattress for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud vs Rubix

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Rubix

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
