As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets a number of our criteria for what a excellent mattress must provide. With eight unique layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud uses all of the proper materials in its construction. Dreamcloud vs Puffy
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives great airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Resting below are a mixture of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress contains better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid beds.

Even though it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there is no hug or significant shaping to the bed. If you are searching to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, especially for all you back sleepers on the market.

Construction Dreamcloud vs Puffy

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Puffy

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other people to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Puffy

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Puffy

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
