Construction Dreamcloud vs Posturepedic
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Posturepedic
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other individuals to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than simply describing the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud vs Posturepedic
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.
While buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Posturepedic
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
