From the tufted cashmere cover that gives good airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud is designed to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mixture of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress includes better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid beds.

Despite the fact that it uses multiple memory foam layers, there’s no hug or significant contouring to the bed. If you are looking to sink into a mattress, proceed from the DreamCloud.

Construction Dreamcloud vs Nest

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Nest

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other people to give their view as well. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud vs Nest

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Nest

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
