Construction Dreamcloud vs Nest Latex Hybrid

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Nest Latex Hybrid

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional people to present their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of this mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud vs Nest Latex Hybrid

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Nest Latex Hybrid

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
