Construction Dreamcloud vs Memory Foam

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Memory Foam

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

Now I want to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional people to present their opinion too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Memory Foam

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Memory Foam

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
