Construction Dreamcloud vs Leesa Sapira

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Leesa Sapira

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I want to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to give their opinion too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Leesa Sapira

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Leesa Sapira

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
