Because it’s a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets many of our criteria for what a excellent mattress should provide. With 8 unique layers of support and comfort, the DreamCloud uses all of the proper materials in its construction. Dreamcloud vs Kingsdown
From the tufted cashmere cover that provides great airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mix of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress includes better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid beds.

Despite the fact that it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there is no hug or significant contouring to the mattress. If you’re searching to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support center keeps you aligned all night long, particularly for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Dreamcloud vs Kingsdown

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Kingsdown

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud vs Kingsdown

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Kingsdown

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
