Construction Dreamcloud vs Idle
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Idle
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I want to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to give their opinion too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Idle
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
When purchasing a new bed, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Idle
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
