Construction Dreamcloud vs Idle Sleep

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Idle Sleep

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of the three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their view as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.

firmness test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Idle Sleep

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new bed, most men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Idle Sleep

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
