Construction Dreamcloud vs Heavenly Bed

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Heavenly Bed

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional people to present their opinion too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just describing the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Heavenly Bed

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Heavenly Bed

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
