As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets many of our criteria for what a quality bed should have. With 8 unique layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud uses all the proper materials in its construction. Dreamcloud vs Costco
From the tufted cashmere cover that provides great airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this bed contains better quality relaxation materials than most other hybrid beds.

Despite the fact that it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there is no hug or significant contouring to the mattress. If you’re looking to sink into a mattress, proceed from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, especially for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Dreamcloud vs Costco

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Costco

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

Now I want to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.

firmness test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Costco

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Costco

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
