Construction Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of the three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other individuals to give their view too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just describing the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
