Construction Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn Mattress

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn Mattress

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other individuals to present their view as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn Mattress

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn Mattress

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
