Construction Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn Aurora

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn Aurora

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional individuals to give their view too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn Aurora

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Brooklyn Aurora

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
