Construction Dreamcloud vs Brentwood

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Brentwood

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional individuals to give their view too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud vs Brentwood

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Brentwood

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.

I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
