Construction Dreamcloud vs Amerisleep A2

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Amerisleep A2

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional people to give their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just describing the feel of this mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud vs Amerisleep A2

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Amerisleep A2

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I am especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
