Construction Dreamcloud vs Allswell Supreme

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Allswell Supreme

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just describing the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud vs Allswell Supreme

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Allswell Supreme

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
