Construction Dreamcloud vs Alexander

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Alexander

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other people to give their view as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud vs Alexander

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Alexander

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
