Construction Dreamcloud Versus Winkbed

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Versus Winkbed

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional people to present their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Versus Winkbed

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Versus Winkbed

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
