Construction Dreamcloud Versus Casper
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Versus Casper
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to present their view as well. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to just describing the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Versus Casper
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
While purchasing a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Versus Casper
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
