Construction Dreamcloud User Review
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud User Review
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional individuals to give their view as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than simply describing the feel of this mattress for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud User Review
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.
When buying a new bed, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud User Review
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
