Construction Dreamcloud Too Heavy

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Too Heavy

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other people to give their view too. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.

firmness test

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud Too Heavy

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Too Heavy

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
