Construction Dreamcloud Supply Chain
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Supply Chain
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other people to present their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just describing the feel of this mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Supply Chain
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
While purchasing a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Supply Chain
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.
I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
