Construction Dreamcloud Sleeper
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Sleeper
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other people to give their view too. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to just describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Sleeper
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
While purchasing a new bed, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Sleeper
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
