As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud fulfills a number of our standards for what a excellent mattress should have. With 8 unique layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud utilizes all of the proper materials in its construction. Dreamcloud Sleep Review
From the tufted cashmere cover that provides good airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud is designed to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress contains better quality relaxation materials than most other hybrid mattresses.

Even though it uses multiple memory foam layers, there’s not any hug or significant contouring to the bed. If you are looking to sink into a mattress, move on from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, particularly for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Dreamcloud Sleep Review

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Sleep Review

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other individuals to present their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of this mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud Sleep Review

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new bed, the majority of men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Sleep Review

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
