Construction Dreamcloud Side Sleeping
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Side Sleeping
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional people to give their view as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud Side Sleeping
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.
While purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Side Sleeping
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
