Construction Dreamcloud Side Sleeper
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Side Sleeper
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
Now I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to just explaining the feel of this mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Side Sleeper
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
When purchasing a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Side Sleeper
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
