Construction Dreamcloud Review Video
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Review Video
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other people to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than simply explaining the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Review Video
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
While purchasing a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Review Video
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
