Construction Dreamcloud Quality Standards

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Quality Standards

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional individuals to give their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Quality Standards

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Quality Standards

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
