Construction Dreamcloud Problems

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Problems

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

At this point I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to present their view as well. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud Problems

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Problems

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
