Construction Dreamcloud Peakget
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Peakget
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other individuals to present their opinion as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than simply describing the feel of this mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Peakget
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.
When purchasing a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Peakget
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
