Construction Dreamcloud Overfilled Microplush Mattress Pad

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Overfilled Microplush Mattress Pad

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of the three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Overfilled Microplush Mattress Pad

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Overfilled Microplush Mattress Pad

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
