Construction Dreamcloud Order
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Order
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to give their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Order
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
When purchasing a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Order
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
