Construction Dreamcloud Negative

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Negative

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three other individuals to present their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud Negative

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Negative

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I am particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
