Construction Dreamcloud Nectar Mattress
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Nectar Mattress
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of these three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional individuals to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
As opposed to just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Nectar Mattress
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.
When purchasing a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Nectar Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
