Construction Dreamcloud Mattress vs Tuft And Needle

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Mattress vs Tuft And Needle

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud Mattress vs Tuft And Needle

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress vs Tuft And Needle

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
