Construction Dreamcloud Mattress vs Sleep Ez Mattress

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Mattress vs Sleep Ez Mattress

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

dream cloud firmness

At this point I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional people to present their opinion too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply explaining the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud Mattress vs Sleep Ez Mattress

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress vs Sleep Ez Mattress

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
